CERAN's history
The Château du Haut-Neubois was built between 1908 and 1911 on the outskirts of Spa, a town then at the height of its glory as a spa resort for the nobility and aristocracy.
Initially a holiday destination for the Peltzer family, a powerful dynasty of Verviers wool manufacturers, the Château du Haut-Neubois passed through various hands down the ages before being bought by the CERAN Group in February 1984. The Château du Haut-Neubois has always been, and still is, a welcoming place to stay. Nowadays, the CERAN Group develops its activities there and uses it to host its residential and intensive seminars in 11 languages. The perfect setting for learning and gaining inspiration! CERAN courses are for professional adults, young adults aged 18 to 22 and children aged 10 to 18 from over 50 countries.
Key milestones in CERAN's history.
Above all else, CERAN is a personal adventure, that of Monique & René Bastin, whose dream was to teach foreign languages in a context of international encounters. The key words here are hospitality, respect and kindness.
1975
In 1975, Monique & René Bastin, back from Burundi where they taught French for ten years, buy a château in Spa (Nivezé) where they can organise French courses and fulfil their dream of creating a place for international encounters founded on the values of hospitality and respect for others. They develop a new innovative and interactive methodology for learning a foreign language based on the principles of immersion. In 1977, they form the public limited company CERAN, Centre d’Etude et de Rencontre à Nivezé (Centre for Studies and Encounters at Nivezé).
